The Journey Continues: Depending Upon God
Our internet connection was down recently, for an entire day and into the evening. I noticed it first as I made my 5 AM coffee. Working from home was a major hurdle, running my computer using my phone's hotspot. And that evening, my wife and I had to watch our favorite show on my laptop, using my phone's mobile hotspot as the source of the signal. That was even more annoying than trying to work without a fully functional virtual workspace.
We live in a time where the need for wi-fi is hugely important. Our entertainment requires wi-fi: forget Netflix or Hulu if there's no wi-fi. Household conveniences like smart timers run on wi-fi, so forget all your lights and devices that run on Alexa. Our phones or computers cannot work well if there is no wi-fi. And for those of us who work remotely, forget getting a day's work done if you depend on wi-fi to connect with your company's network. We've become dependent on technology for even the basics of life. But has that dependence on technology diluted the need for depending on God?
In Matthew's Gospel, chapter 6, Jesus shares with us that we should not worry about the necessities of life, that God will supply our needs. He compares birds, and how God feeds them. Or the lilies of the field, and how they are more glorious than Solomon. He then encourages us to keep from being anxious about our food, drink, or clothing. That if we seek God, and His Kingdom, our needs will be taken care of.
Occasionally we need reminders of our need for God. We need to face challenges, some simple, some not-so-simple, to bring us back into focus on seeking God. A day without the internet taught me that. And while shutting down the internet to a house full of family members may not be a good idea, abstaining from technology on an individual basis and using that time to seek God, might be one of the best things we can do for ourselves. A day of focus, of time in His Word, or of intentional prayer. We certainly don't need wi-fi for that. All we need is faith.
Soli Deo Gloria
