The Journey Continues: Drop Prayers
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, ESV
OK. Can I get a show of hands of how many of us pull out our cell phones multiple times a day to check social media? Yeah, it's what I suspected. And I'm just as guilty as the next person. I'm doing it while working, while watching TV, or worse, in the middle of my daily prayers and devotions. Checking our phones for any reason can be, and is, a distraction. And I want to change that in my life.
I pray daily, usually for several minutes in the early morning before I start my day. But the prayer practice I want to develop is what I call "Drop Prayers": praying for someone or some situation as that person or situation comes to my mind. It's more akin to what Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica: pray without ceasing. And it's something I don't do, well, at all. And that is the change I want to do.
It's not easy. It's much easier to pick up my cell phone, apply my biometrics to unlock my phone, and tap on the Facebook icon. Several weeks ago, though, I thought of using that distraction as a means to adopt this practice of praying. Sure, open up Facebook, but when I see a post from a friend, pray for that person. Maybe it's a quick "Father, be with them" prayer. Maybe, if I know their needs, I pray for their needs.
Now, I confess that I have not put this into practice yet, although in the last few days I've had dear friends who have medical needs that, upon seeing their posts, I have prayed for them. And that's a start. But I need to make this a REGULAR practice, and for something like that, I need accountability. Someone who will ask me "hey, how's that Drop Prayer practice going for you?" And I need to make it a practice every time I pick up my phone.
So, will you join me? Will you adopt this Drop Prayer practice with me, and maybe we can lovingly hold each other to it? I'd love that....
